Early 20th Century Camphor Wood Trunk Oriental Carved Chest
This piece has now sold, however if you would like to commission us to source and paint something similar, please contact us to discuss.
This strikingly detailed camphor wood Eastern Oriental trunk dates from the early 1900’s. Hand carved and framed, the front and top panels depict battle scenes with horsemen, figures, trees and pagodas; the end panels and back display calmer, pastoral scenes.
The original shaped and etched brass catch plate opens to reveal a generous storage space.
The whole piece has been thoroughly cleaned; the outside dark waxed and the inside of the trunk has been treated to a hemp base salve which restores and revives the wood.
This antique chest is in excellent condition for its age; the front left corner has been sympathetically repaired and it is barely visible that there was a fault, whilst the framed inlay has cracked as can be seen in the close up photo, but this imperfection does not detract from its beauty.
