Rescue, Restore, Revive Part 7 - Painting Furniture… Why!?

In earlier parts of this series, we've provided a comprehensive list of essential tools for repairing various types of furniture, guided you through fixing broken pieces, removing stains and other discolouration, as well as restoring minor damage and removing the original finish.

These final few parts of this series will walk you through everything you need to know to successfully paint furniture, from preparation to finishing touches whatever the surface.

Painting furniture is not just a trend; it has been popular for many years - it’s a personal expression of style that can breathe new life into your home. Whether you’re looking to revitalise an old heirloom, match a new decor scheme, or simply unleash your creativity, painting furniture is a rewarding project that can transform your space.

Why Paint Furniture?

Before diving into how, let’s explore why painting furniture is such a popular choice:

  • Cost-Effective Transformation - Instead of buying new furniture, painting allows you to refresh what you already have, saving money while creating a unique look.
  • Customisation - Painting enables you to choose colours and finishes that reflect your personal style, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
  • Environmental Impact - By revamping existing furniture, you contribute to sustainability efforts, reducing waste and the demand for new products.

Considerations Before You Start

  1. Surface Preparation - Proper surface preparation is crucial for a successful paint job. Begin by cleaning your furniture thoroughly to remove dust, grease, and grime. If the piece has an existing finish, such as varnish or paint, you’ll need to strip or sand it down to create a smooth, clean surface. This step ensures that the new paint adheres properly and lasts longer. Please see our previous blog for help on this.
  2. Material Matters - Each type of furniture material requires different preparation methods:
  • Solid Wood - This is the easiest material to paint, as it can be stripped down to a bare surface, providing a perfect “blank canvas.” Use sandpaper to smooth rough areas and fill in any imperfections with wood filler.

  • Laminate - Laminate furniture can be trickier, as it often has a glossy finish that paint won’t adhere to without proper preparation. Use a bonding primer like “Ultragrip” from Fusion before painting to ensure durability. Avoid “3 in 1” paints; they often don’t provide the necessary adhesion for laminate surfaces.
  • Metal - For metal furniture, select paints specifically designed for metal surfaces to prevent rust and ensure a lasting finish. A rust-inhibiting primer can help extend the life of your paint job.

  • Leather – Yes, its true, you can even paint your leather sofa! A bit of sandpaper, a lot of time and a lot of determination is required, but it is possible… we will cover this in more detail at a later date.

  1. Quality of Existing Finish - If your piece has a high-quality or aesthetically pleasing finish, consider whether painting is the right choice. While painting can mask imperfections, it may also diminish the value of valuable antiques. However, if you plan to keep the piece for yourself and love it, don’t hesitate to give it a fresh coat!
  2. Purpose of the Piece - Think about where the furniture will be used. High-traffic items such as dining tables and chairs will require durable paint and a tougher protective finish.
  3. Personal Style - Your style should guide your colour choices and finishing techniques. Whether you prefer a modern, sleek look or a rustic, vintage feel, painting furniture is a perfect way to express your taste. Don’t be afraid to experiment with bold colours, stencils, or distressing techniques to create a look that is uniquely yours.

  1. Skill Level - If you are new to painting, it might be wise to practice on a less valuable piece first. Painting furniture is more than just slapping on paint; it requires technique and patience.

Painting furniture is a creative and rewarding way to transform your space. By understanding the materials, preparation needs, and painting techniques, you can successfully refresh your furniture and express your unique style. Remember that patience and attention to detail are key to achieving a stunning result. So, gather your materials, unleash your creativity, and enjoy the process of turning your old furniture into beautiful, personalised pieces that enhance your home decor!
